Ford Files 19 Trademark Applications Preparing a Possible Metaverse Push

Ford, a leading automotive company, has filed 19 trademark applications regarding possible metaverse activities. The documents hint at Ford-branded NFTs (non-fungible tokens) being launched on Ford's own marketplace. It also mentions the possibility of offering virtual models of Ford's cars, such as the Mustang, Mustang Mach-E and the Bronco.

Ford Hints at Metaverse Movement

Ford is one of the largest U.S.-based auto brands in terms of sales. It has filed several trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This is to prepare for a push into the metaverse. Ford is trying to protect its activities within the NFT market, which includes the sale of Ford-branded NFTs. These NFTs may contain text, audio or video that are related to Ford.

These applications are part of a larger effort to protect digital representations of Ford's most popular models such as the 150 Lightning, Lincoln and Ford, Lightning, Broncos, Explorers, Raptors, Mustang Mach-Es, Transit, Escapes, Expeditions, Mavericks, Rangers, and Mustang.

The trademark applications also cover digital clothing that contains references to the brand and digital spare parts for any of the models previously mentioned. According to Mike Kondoudis (USPTO-licensed attorney), this could be the first step in a planned digital strategy for Ford. He claimed that the filings were a "big deal" into the metaverse.

Ford's Digital Expansion

Ford's decision is not surprising, considering that it had previously stated that it was looking at the digital world in order to find new ways to grow its business. Alexandra Ford English, global brand merchandising director at Ford, stated that in September:

We want to provide a collection of inspiring merchandise and accessories for Ford enthusiasts wherever they go.

Ford is the latest company to embrace digital worlds and products. French automaker Renault recently made this move as well, signing a partnership agreement with The Sandbox, which is a metaverse platform that allows for virtual automotive experiences using products from the brand.

Hyundai, a Korean auto company, is also entering the metaverse, and presenting their future products in a metaverse called Zepeto.
