Ethereum Devs Successfully Complete Merge Shadow Fork With No ‘Client Incompatibility Issues’

The Merge will be implemented next week, or approximately four days from now. Ethereum will then transition from proof of work (PoW), to proof-of stake (PoS) within the next week. According to Ethereum developers the programmers had completed the 13th shadow fork before the Paris upgrade.

The 13th and Final Shadow Forks of Ethereum Are Complete

Social media was abuzz Friday with talk about The Merge, Ethereum's transition to PoW from PoS and the Merge. ETH developers and Nethermind, an engineering and research company for Ethereum, announced that the last shadowfork has been completed. A shadow fork is basically an upgrade to Ethereum's existing mainnet. The public is not aware of this testing phase.

ETH developers have completed 13 successful shadow forks so far with the last shadowfork. Nethermind researchers said that transition in Mainnet-Shadowfork-13 (the last shadowfork before The Merge), was successful for all Nethermind Nodes. To aid in testing, there is a shadow network scanner, a shadow mainnet explorer and a shadow web Beacon Chain Explorer.

Bitcoin.com published a report on the pre-Merge upgrade, Bellatrix, on September 6. This was the last pre-Merge transition prior to the Paris Upgrade. Paris will trigger The Merge. After the last PoW block has been mined, an Ethereum validator can mine the next block. If the block is successfully mined and verified by an operator, then The Merge will be 100% complete.

After the shadow fork, an Ethereum developer wrote that "MSF13 merged earlier this day, we saw attestation rates drop to -97%." "This was due some stale data that I failed to clean up on one node, the node believed it was on the wrong shadowfork. There were no other issues with client compatibility.

The Friday shadow fork was successful, signaling the readiness for The Merge. Entities running ETH software will have to upgrade. Some people celebrated the shadowfork while others criticised Ethereum and called it "centralized". The test was widely discussed on social media channels such as Twitter and Reddit, where it was discussed extensively.

The Merge will execute when the network hits a Total Terminal Difficulty (TTD) value on the execution layer, which will be 58750000000000000000000. This will occur approximately four days after the date of this post, which is September 14, 2022.
