DOJ Launches Network of Over 150 Federal Prosecutors to Combat Criminal Uses of Crypto


The U.S. Department of Justice has created the Digital Asset Coordinator Network, which includes over 150 federal prosecutors. According to the authority, the network will help to counter the increasing threat of illegal use of digital assets to American citizens strong>

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), announced Friday that the National Digital Asset Coordinator (DAC Network) has been established by its Criminal Division.

The Justice Department stated that the launch of DAC Network is "in support of the department’s efforts to combat growing threat posed to the American public by the illicit use digital assets," further explaining:

The DAC Network is led by the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team of the Department (NCET). It includes over 150 federal prosecutors from U.S. Attorney's offices and other components.

The DOJ stated that the DAC Network would be the primary venue for prosecutors to receive and disseminate specialized technical training and expertise about the investigation and prosecution digital asset crime investigations.

The Criminal Division and National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team have created the DAC Network to continue to protect the department and its prosecutors from the ever-evolving criminal use of digital asset technology.

In October 2017, the DOJ established the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team "to handle complex investigations and prosecutions regarding criminal misuses and abuses of cryptocurrency, especially crimes committed via virtual currency exchanges, mixing & tumbling services and money laundering infrastructure actors."

The DAC Network members will learn how to apply existing laws and authorities to digital assets, as well as best practices for investigating crimes related to digital assets.

The DAC Network will be a resource for information and discussion on new digital asset issues such as smart contracts, defi, token-based platforms and their use in criminal activities.

The Justice Department also noted that the DAC Network would "raise awareness about the unique international considerations surrounding the crypto ecosystem, including benefits of leveraging foreign relations and the challenges of cross border digital asset investigations,"
