BitBlockBoom is a network of Bitcoiners and like-minded people that offers opportunities to learn and enjoy each others' company.
This opinion article is by Tone Vays. Analyst and derivatives trader. As the fifth Annual BitBlockBoom ended, Gary Leland, the founder, reflected on the difficult road that led to over 600 Bitcoiners.
"During COVID-19, I wanted to attend Bitcoin events. But there weren't many options. I assumed that there would be others who wanted to interact with humans during COVID-19. This was the main reason I decided to launch BitBlockBoom in 2020 & 2021. It turned out that I was right. In 2022, we have more than doubled our vendors and attendees. It has always been my main goal to host the type of conference I enjoy attending. And it seems that many people agree with me, so growth has been sweet.
Amazing presentations and panels by Jack Mallers and Jeff Booth, Jimmy Song and Senator Cynthia Lummis will be relevant for many years. However, the most important takeaway was how happy people were when they met their virtual friends in person. Twitter Spaces have become a huge success, thanks in large part to the efforts of Swan and Bitcoin Magazine. They bring many voices that would otherwise be anonymous or silent. This was the first time that these small groups of online voice-only hosts had an opportunity to meet up in person.

Surfer Jim (@surferjimw), said it best when he stated that "I now have friendships all over the globe and events like these really allow me to connect with my extended family." He also mentioned how meeting other Twitter personalities such as TC (@Meditation_Man), and Ant (@2140data), was a highlight of his trip. It was mutually beneficial to ask TC about his experience at this event, where he showed his face for first time. "Meeting Surfer Jim was amazing, and watching him orange-pill my mother-in law was incredible," TC stated.
People all over the globe tend to underestimate how important privacy is. Bitcoiners are the only community that takes privacy more seriously than hackers. It is clear that the sheer number of people who were willing to openly present themselves and show their faces for the first time sends a strong signal to the world that they are prepared to face greater challenges and defend what they believe in.
The conference was great, but there were many side events that were popular. Unchained Capital's Bitcoin Commons incubator hosted a meetup, where NYDIG made a big announcement about their Lightning Accelerator Wolf's Clothing. A chess tournament, organized by Mike Jarmuz from Bitcoin Blitz Chess Club, was another side event that attracted a large crowd. It is amazing to see people share common ground with like-minded people. This leads to many steak dinners, and poker games when Bitcoiners get together.
Conference attendees were supportive of Hodlonaut's ongoing legal battle, which threatens to silence many voices within this space. This issue was highlighted by several initiatives and fundraisers throughout the conference.
Gary Leland announced that he is up for a greater challenge next year. The venue will likely double in size to accommodate 1,500 people. It is expected to sell out again.
