A correction is a decline in the overall value of the stock market over a period of time. Typically, this decline will be 10% or more from the recent high.
The value of an individual company’s stock price can decline for many reasons (e.g., changes in the economy). But when stocks prices across the board are falling, we say that there has been a “market correction.”
A traditional stock market correction happens when shares fall by 10% or more from their most recent high. When this happens, it’s often referred to as a bear market — because share prices have dropped so low they look like they belong to bears!
But while traditional stock market corrections are common, they don’t happen very often — not even once every decade! In fact, we haven’t seen one since 2011 (although there was a very small one in 2015).
